Selling Colored Contact Lenses in Saudi Arabia: What Retailers Need to Know About SFDA Rules

· 3 min read · Eye Language team

In Saudi Arabia, colored contact lenses are not an ordinary beauty product. They are medical devices regulated by the Saudi Food & Drug Authority (SFDA), and that applies to plano cosmetic lenses just as much as to prescription lenses. For an optical store or a distributor, understanding these rules protects your business from seized stock and violations, and above all protects your customers.

1. The lens must be registered with the SFDA

Before a medical device can be placed on the Saudi market it needs a Medical Device Marketing Authorization from the SFDA and a listing number in the national medical device registry. When you deal with any supplier, ask for:

  • The marketing authorization for the brand, and which brands or collections it covers.
  • The national listing number for each product.
  • The authorization’s expiry date, to confirm it is still valid.

2. The supplier must be a licensed establishment

Whoever imports, distributes or stores lenses needs a medical device establishment licence from the SFDA. A manufacturer based outside the Kingdom works through a licensed Authorized Representative in the Kingdom, who is responsible for the product before the SFDA. Buying lenses from an unlicensed source, however attractive the price, exposes your store to non-compliant stock.

At Eye Language: our products are licensed by the Ministry of Health and the SFDA, we are registered with the Ministry of Commerce with a valid commercial registration, and we hold ISO 13485 certification covering import, distribution, storage, wholesale, retail and authorized representation for medical devices. We can share documents with our partners on request.

3. Labelling and packaging

Make sure every box clearly shows the essentials: product name, lot number, expiry date, wear duration, power where relevant, and the details of the manufacturer and authorized representative. A box missing this information is a warning sign.

4. Traceability and records

  • Keep purchase invoices from your supplier. They prove your stock comes from a compliant source.
  • Record the lot numbers you receive so you can act fast if a product is ever recalled.
  • Never sell an expired box or one with damaged packaging.

5. Storage and display

The SFDA treats storage as part of device safety. Keep lenses away from heat and direct sunlight, and never open sterile boxes for display. Use shade guides and photos to show colours instead.

6. Responsible marketing

When you promote colored lenses in store or on social media, avoid unproven medical claims and always remind customers to get an eye exam, respect the replacement schedule and never share lenses. It builds trust and keeps you clear of violations.

Quick checklist

  • A valid SFDA marketing authorization for every brand you sell.
  • A supplier licensed as a medical device establishment, or the manufacturer’s authorized representative.
  • Lot number and expiry date on every box.
  • Purchase invoices kept and a log of lot numbers.
  • Storage away from heat and sun.
  • Marketing without exaggerated medical claims.
